The Best Cereal MilkShake…for breakfast.

Serious question.

Has anyone ever tried ginger kombucha?!

I haven’t.

But last weekend my sister had this drink from here called Gin & Ginger and I tried it and it was amazing and I don’t even like ginger because it’s weird and spicy sometimes but this was incredible.  And for some reason when I tried the drink it made me think of kombucha and then someone posted a ginger kombucha they were drinking on instagram and I’ve spent the last week building up unrealistic expectations about how ginger kombucha is going to be the best thing I’ve ever tried.  And how soon everyone will know me as the girl with the ginger kombucha (anyone know where that reference is from?).

I know I’m supposed to be all gung-ho about kombucha because I use chia seeds and eat cacao nibs (covered in dark chocolate) and take my omega-3’s and pretend that sweet potatoes and spinach smoothies are just you know the best thing ever…but kombucha kinda scares me.  mmmno really scares me.  That little, swirly bacterial culture in there would make anyone a little hesitant.  So yeah, I just can’t make up my mind about it.

Anyways.  I found my workout plan for my wedding.  Just the workout part.  Actually just the weight lifting part.  I’m not doing the food part because that does not look fun at all.  Yeah, no.  And I can handle cardio on my own.  And some yoga, bodypump and (hopefully) barre classes will be thrown in there too.

And in accordance with this post (which might possibly be my favorite post that I have ever read…puts healthy/balanced eating so simply), this weekend will contain some indulgences including Gnocchi night with my sister and her Italian boyfriend for which I have been advised to wear my stretchy pants for.  And then for Easter I am making a version of these.  Holy crap.  Gonna.  Be.  Good.

And speaking of food (which I really don’t even need to say because I’m always ‘speaking of food’…), I was talking to Andrew on the phone the other night before bed and all of the sudden he was like, “Crap!”  So I was like, “WHAT?!”  And he was like, “I forgot to eat dinner.”

Who does that? In all my 22 years of life I have never (ever) forgotten to eat a meal.

And as long as there are things like Milk & Cereal Shakes for breakfast…I will continue to never (ever) forget to eat a meal.

[NOTE: This recipe requires that you soak the cereal + oats OVERNIGHT!!! Just wanted to let you know so you don’t wake up Saturday morning and try to make this only to be disappointed because you didn’t know!]

Cereal Milk Breakfast Shake

serves 1

[inspired by the brilliance of Oh, Ladycakes & Kath Eats Real Food]

Ingredients to soak in the fridge overnight:

1/3 cup Natures Path Crunchy Vanilla Sunrise Cereal (or another Vanilla flavored cereal)

1/3 cup quick oats (or old fashioned)

1/3 cup Vanilla Greek yogurt (I used Chobani)

2/3 cup sweetened almond milk

1 Tbsp chia seeds

1 date, pitted and chopped

scant 1/8 tsp vanilla extract

1/8 tsp cinnamon

pinch salt

Ingredients to add in the morning:

1 ripe frozen banana

1/3 cup almond milk

Combine the first 9 ingredients in a bowl.  Cover and place in the fridge overnight.  In the morning, scoop the bowl of soaked ingredients into a food processor/Vitamix/blender and add in frozen banana and almond milk.  Blend for ~60 seconds, or until really smooth. If desired, garnish with cinnamon and more cereal.

  1. Kombucha is deeeeliciousss!!! I love it. Waaay too much for the price of a bottle… but yes, the ginger one is pretty fantastic (although not my favorite…the chia ones are my faves!)

    • Ooohh the chia seed kind always looks the most interesting:)) but never tried it! Another plus…the chia seeds could hide the culture part that tends to creep me out!

  2. Was totally nervous about trying kombucha too but it was awesome!! :)

    • I tried one kind about a year ago and thought it tasted like a really sweet wine. Not bad, just interesting. I can totally see me loving the ginger flavor though!! Do you have a fav brand/flavor?!

      • I haven’t tried the ginger flavor yet but the one I tried and loved was Synergy’s Passionberry bliss! The flavor did kind of remind me of wine but I don’t remember it being too sweet. I will have to try the ginger flavor next!

  3. Whoa. So I went through a serious Momofuku obsession awhile ago, but this sounds about 98345x better than any of Tosi’s cereal milk concoctions since it’s so darn healthy and won’t leave me feeling super sick! Yey :) Also: PIOLA. I so want to go there!! Do you get gnocchi there over the pizza??

Also: GINGER KOMBUCHA. Intense. I like plain and fruity flavors of kombucha, but ginger I cannot handle. So spicy! I feel like it is the tonic of true health lovers, but I just cannot. My boyfriend has forever held against me the fact that I made him finish my glass while we were taste-testing with the owners of this incubator place. Whoops.

Anyway, did I say time suck or what? Can’t stop reading your blog!
