Cocoa Green Smoothie with Almond Butter
What does one post the day after Christmas?
How about a post about how I’m really in denial about de-Christmasing my house? Like I’m fine taking the Christmas tree down, but I wanna keep out the little bit of garland we have. It just looks wintery, not overly Christmas-y.
But a post on that would have nothing to do with food…so that wouldn’t work. I should probably post a nice recap post to reflect on the past year. But I did that the day before Christmas.
I was planning on sharing a recipe for Paleo Double Chocolate Zucchini Muffins today…but then I totally lost the recipe. Well, my phone totally lost the recipe, which is why I’m posting this at 2pm instead of 5am.
I had typed the recipe into my notepad on my phone and then the note got deleted. I think it happened because I take way to many pictures and always use up all my storage space and my phone yells at me to delete something, but I don’t…and then one of the zillion notes I have gets deleted. So no muffins today.
Instead we’ve got a less fluffy and more creamy breakfast option…a smoothie.
And maybe you’re kinda over baked goods for the moment and a smoothie sounds more crave-worthy than a muffin. I said maybe.
But fortunately, there’s still cocoa.
How is your hot cocoa consumption going along? Mine is going quite well and about to get even better. My dad gave me and my sisters giant packs of hot chocolate mixes for Christmas. Like 35 hot chocolate mixes to be exact. 7 different flavors. I’m now properly prepared for the rest of winter.
My dad is all about the bulk purchases. Maybe it’s the result of being the father to 3 girls who have a tendency to use too much of everything (be it paper towels, toilet paper, or umm…money). I shop for clothes far less now that it’s my money and not my dad’s money…sorry, Dad.
Speaking of clothes, I’ve never really been a fashionable person. I see people wearing things now and I’m like, “where did you even buy that?! It’s so weird. But I like it and I want it but am not a risk taker enough to wear it.” I’m working on the fashion risk taker bit.
I did buy this vest, which I find ridiculous, but fortunately it’s more cozy than ridiculous so I wear it.
So this smoothie, I apologize for the color. It’s an off green color and not the vibrant holiday green you want to see this time of year, but what it lacks in pretty color it makes up for in creaminess. Depending on what type of cocoa powder you use, you may end up with an even browner smoothie, you’ve been warned.
I’ve been wanting to share this recipe with you for awhile. It’s my go-to green smoothie when I want something fresh (but still filling) to start my day. Around the holiday season, heavy meals seem to be the norm so a fresh start to the day is always a nice touch…and a great way to make sure you get in some greens for the day.
- 1 heaping cup greens (I used a mix of kale & spinach)
- 1 frozen banana
- 3/4 cup milk (I used 2%)

- 2 teaspoons cocoa
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup
- scant 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 4 ice cubes
- 1/3 scoop vanilla protein powder (optional)
- Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
