Making the House a Home (an easy wall art project)

We’ve recently been looking for some art to add to a particularly empty wall in our little house.

We had been casually looking for something to fill the space since we moved in a year ago.  After not finding anything we were crazy about, we decided to take matters into our own hands and pretend to be crafty. So here is what we did!

We went to Paper Source to find some pretty wrapping paper that I would never actually use to wrap presents because it cost us $21 for three 20″ x 30″ sheets.  But can I just say, geez I wanna live in Paper Source…so much gold and glitter and colorful calendars and and those pretty tassels like these that I want to put in a nursery one day.

So as said, we bought three sheets of wrapping paper.  Paper Source sells wrapping paper in individual sheets and they’re a much higher quality than a normal wrapping paper.  The paper almost feels similar to a dollar bill…like a cotton blend.  After a little debate, we choose this, this and this paper.

Then we headed to Hobby Lobby and bought three 18″ x 20″ wooden frames & some foam boards to act as a backer for the frames.

First, we used a boxcutter to cut the foam board to fit the back of the wood frames.

Next we wrapped the foam boards with the wrapping paper (just like you’re wrapping a present).

Then we slipped the wrapped foam boards into the frames.  You can glue, nail or tape the foam boards in place.  We used little screws in the corners.  The foam boards are so light that taping or gluing would work fine too! I just want to be able to change the wrapping paper out if I get tired of it…so glue wasn’t the best choice for us.

We then added picture hanging claws (our frames didn’t come with any) and hung them on the wall.

It was nice to take pictures outside of the kitchen for a change!

Have you done any DIY art projects? We’re still hunting for something for our bedroom walls and I’d love some ideas!

  2. I’ve never heard of Paper Source before, but I just looked it up and there is one fairly close to me. My husband and I close on our new house later this month (yay!) and I am in love with this idea… from the frames to the wrapping paper! Thanks for the inspiration. :)

  3. This is an amazing idea! My boyfriend and I are trying to figure out how to decorate a wall in our bedroom and I think this would be absolutely perfect! I love the paper you chose.

  4. Love this idea! I recently bought the Paper Source wrapping paper for roasted veggies and have been planning to frame that for my kitchen. Love these frames and will have to look for them.

  5. These look great! :) One of my goals for 2015 is to get more crafty and do more DIY’s .. you say this is easy, but it looks hard to me! :) Haha. Nice job, it looks so cute in your space!

  8. I love this!! We have a HUGE dining room wall that I have no idea what to do with. This might be it :) Although I need to find another place that sells good quality paper since I don’t have a Paper Source near me :(

  9. My apartment is in desperate need of some simple artwork, but I can never find anything that I like. I think this may be the solution. I love the prints you chose!

  10. Such a cute idea! I’ve seen this done with fabric but wrapping paper opens up a whole new world of easy decor :)

  11. That looks lovely! I’m going to remember this for when I will have a real house for my own.

  12. These would look awesome on my room’s walls!

  13. What a fabulous idea, Kylie! You should take more pics outside of your kitchen ;)

  14. I did something just like this in my bedroom. I made the frames from wall molding that I got at Home Depot (it was hard to make them and they aren’t quite as symmetrical as the ones you bought haha). And I used the same type of paper from Paper Source for all three. I love the way it looks and it fills up a pretty big wall for cheap!

  15. Um hello crafty GODDESS! I LOVE THIS!!! And crafty stuff so much. So last year my roommate and I painted a few canvases for our living room…mine was a four-panel thing based off this, which was actually much easier to recreate than I expected: https://www.etsy.com/listing/77751424/ready-to-hang-original-large-abstract

And one year, Erik and I made a painting using this painter’s tape technique: http://witandwhistle.com/2011/01/12/easy-peasy-painting/ for his living room. Except we used different colors and just painted solid colors instead of that gradation business.

I love that you and Andrew created these together and can’t wait to see what you do next!!

    • Oh I love panel art!! And I like that painters tape technique because it’s just like coloring inside the lines…which is totally doable for me!

Currently obsessed with A Beautiful Mess and all their DIY projects. Can’t get enough!!
