Weekend Happenings

This weekend I got invited by Claire to attend Houstonia Magazine’s Veggie Riot.

Claire is the dietitian for Snap Kitchen and had a free ticket for me so I happily joined her for the afternoon.  The way Veggie Riot worked was a bunch of Houston restaurants were given a vegetable that they had to use in a dish.  The event was for Recipe for Success Foundation’s annual VegOut! Challenge, which encourages people to eat 30 different vegetables in 30 days.

We got there about 2pm and met up with Erika before perusing the booths.

The event was held at the Houstonia Magazine house located in The Heights.  If you’re not familiar with Houston, The Heights is a very artsy and historical part of Houston.  The houses have a lot of charm with big porches, white picket fences and a lot of COLOR and businesses (like the Houstonia Mag House) are interspersed with residences.

On to the event.

Confession: I was so hot that I didn’t actually eat any veggies while at Veggie Riot.  All I wanted were icy cold things.  So I had…

…a 1/4 of a cocktail…

…1/2 of a Vietnamese iced coffee from Siphon

…and a Chloe’s Pineapple Popsicle

…and did some kombucha sampling.

All which led to a stomach ache.  Worth it.  I mean, have you tried Vietnamese coffee?? Coffee goals.

Some of the veggie dishes included…

Shade made a cauliflower dish.

Dish Society made spiced spring carrots.

Culinaire made a butternut squash tamale.

Bernie’s Burger Bus made what looked to be an insane grilled cheese sandwich with mustard greens.  But by the time I stopped by to taste/take a picture, they were all packed up.  You snooze, you lose.  Still haven’t tried their burgers.  Need to get on that.

Overall a great (calm) afternoon, which taught me the epic-ness of Vietnamese coffee.

  1. This post makes me really want to visit Houston!

  2. I was on the phone with Erika the other day and was talking about how I need to get my butt to Houston so I can hang out with her – and you, too, of course. And then I see this! And now I know how easy it is to hang out with both of you together AND eat great food…. now I really, really have to get down there for a visit.

PS: Yes I just invited myself to crash your future blogger gatherings/parties. Sorrynotsorry ;)

  3. What an cool concept. That house is super cute and I would not have passed up on the Vietnamese iced coffee either!!
