Birthday Cake Toast

Say hi hello to the most fun breakfast of your life.

It’s cake! It’s toast! It’s cake toast!

It’s actually banana bread with sprinkles, but we’re calling it cake toast because that’s what all the cool people are doing.

Yesterday my sister slept over and hung out with me in the morning.  It was SO nice having her here while I did blog work.  I get really lonely on Mondays.  It’s a constant struggle….being an introvert, but then getting depressed when alone, then wanting to be around people, but not wanting to be around people, and then just feeling anxious about nothing.  Sometimes I think hiring someone to hang out with me/keep me calm (I mean, ermm, help me work) on Monday would be helpful, but then in the next moment I’m thinking, “no I’d rather be alone.”  This could all be fixed easily if Maggie could talk.

As I’m typing up this post, Andrew is in the kitchen right now prepping his lunch for work tomorrow and he just informed me that his lunch is going to be meatless.  He’s very proud of himself lol.  He’s come a long way from his initial mentality of, “if it doesn’t have meat, it’s a side dish.” And then he just said, “hey, have you ever tasted olive oil? I just tasted it.  It’s really good.”  Ew.  No.  I don’t want to taste olive oil unless it’s being soaked up by a yummy slice bread.

Andrew and I are heading to Los Angeles on Sunday and I’m so pumped.  It is a bit like pulling teeth to get him to travel.  He’s just very content exactly where he is.  He’s good for me with teaching me to be more present and calm and content right where I am.  Also, I feel like all the painting I’ve been doing and sharing on Stories is helping me slow down and be more aware and present.

And I’m good for him because once we’re at the airport heading somewhere he gets excited.  We are staying in this incredible Airbnb, which I know I’ll be sharing a bajillion photos of.  There is a clawfoot tub and a view of the Hollywood Hills.  Sign me up! Or I did sign us up. YAY!

My personal mission of being in California as many times as possible each year is going well.  I have so many things planned.  We need to rent a car one day to drive an hour-ish away.  I’ve been thinking Zipcar, since an hour is too far for Uber.  Any recs for affordable car rental? Also…have any Los Angeles food/activity recs? I’d love to hear them!

So it is not my birthday until June, but if it was my birthday I’d totally make myself birthday cake toast.  I guess it’s kinda like fairy bread, but the sprinkles are inside the bread instead of on top.  If I would’ve known fairy bread was a thing when I was a child it definitely would’ve replaced cinnamon toast.  Did you have cinnamon toast growing up? Just butter + cinnamon on toast.  Yum.

Equally yum as this birthday cake toast.  ENJOY!

Birthday Cake Toast

Yield: one loaf!

Ingredients:

1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
6 tablespoons butter, melted
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup milk
2 eggs
1 cup ripe bananas, mashed (2 medium-large bananas)
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
hundreds of thousands of sprinkles!

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350ºF.  In a bowl, combine all ingredients.  Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake 50-60 minutes.  Halfway through cooking, cover with foil to prevent the top of the loaf from getting too brown.  It's done when an inserted toothpick comes out clean.  Let cool in the loaf pan for 15-30 minutes before taking the loaf out of the loaf pan.  Slice and serve.  Preferably with candles.

  1. There are no birthdays soon enough in my house, so I think im going to try this with pink sprinkles for Valentine’s Day.
I’m so excited to follow allowing your trip to CA. It’s on my bucket list for sure.

  2. YES! sprinkles in breakfast are one of my favorite lol they make me so darn happy. I’m gonna whip this up tonight :)

  3. Usually you can rent a car from the usual agencies (Budget, Alamo, Enterprise, etc) for like $15/day- if you have Triple A you can get a discount most places too. Enjoy your trip- vacation recaps are some of my favorite blog posts!

  4. You should check out the Green Street Resturant in Pasadena (the zucchini bread is to die for) and The Little Beast in Eagle Rock! The Little Beast is one of my family’s all time favorite restaurants and we make it a point to go every time we are in LA.

  5. If you’re looking for a cute little quaint dessert place Churros Calientes is one of my favorite places in LA! I miss it so much haha. Also tacos at Tacos Tu Madre are the best tacos i’ve had in my life. it’s a cute little hole in the wall shack that stays open late. And 800 degrees pizza is always worth a visit in Santa Monica!

  6. Try Real Food Daily in West Hollywood, and Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles is awesome for comfort food.

  7. Haha I just LOVE the dialogue in this post! I can’t get over how similar our husbands are. Absolutely “needing” meat for a meal, hating traveling, etc…also, I feel ya on being alone. I can alleviate that for you? I’ll come hang out with you in the mornings. We can both work on stuff and be productive, but do it together so we’re not alone! And we can do it while in our pj’s, drink lattes, and eat yummy breakfast options (bc they are the best food options for the entire day!). Sounds like the perfect solution!!

  8. Yes! Major throwback with the comment about the cinnamon toast growing up, except in my case, we did butter with a cinnamon/sugar mixture. My sister and I also used to put confectioners sugar and chocolate syrup on pancakes. Those were the days! ;)

    • Yay memory lane! I can’t remember if we added sugar to our cinnamon toast. We probably did! I remember the only way I would eat oatmeal was with a mountain of sugar (that I added when my grandma turned her back:)).

  9. Dude, can I just say your entire paragraph on being an introvert/getting lonely/not wanting to be around people is EXACTLY how I feel…like all the time. I’ve just never been able to put int into words. Also, this bread looks like a bucket of fun.

  10. I love the addition of sprinkles! So fun!

  11. Sprinkles make everything more fabulous :D

  12. LOL “If it doesn’t have meat it’s a side dish.” Man if only I could get someone to be as adventurous and open as Andrew. I’m waiting for the day I hear, “I’m making lunch and it’s meatless!”

On another note I have been thinking about banana bread lately… this might just end up on my to do list!

  13. Hi Kylie – have you ever tried knitting? I am a total introvert and sometimes struggle with being present and anxious thoughts and knitting is so grounding for me. It’s also a wonderful creative outlet and totally portable. I am obsessed. I know living in Texas may present some limitations to the utility of some knitted items, but there are still so many lightweight options. Just a thought!

    • haha “living in Texas may present some limitations to the utility of some knitted items”<--TRUE! But I love the idea. I can always use more blankets. I've never tried knitting, but will probably try at some point. Thanks for the rec! Someone recently told me about arm knitting where you knit without needles. Sounds cool to me!

  15. It’s totally my birthday next week, might try con Matt into making me some birthday toast ;)

  16. Aah the mental exhaustion of being an anxious introvert. Good times, good times. Right there with you.

  17. If you have time, you should check out Manhattan Beach (about 15-30 min south of LA). It’s the cutest little town, and the food is amazing. If you go, you definitely have to get pancakes at Uncle Bills pancake house.

  18. Have so much fun in CA! This bread looks great for just a weekend brunch. But birthdays also :)

  19. For massive and wonderful ice cream sandwiches, I highly recommend Diddy Riese!
And I always had cinnamon-sugar toast at my grandma’s growing up. Grandmas always know the right amount of sugar and butter to put on things. :)
