Day in the Life

Hey guys!  Popping back in for my second post of the day.

Our Fourth of July was pretty low key.  We both took the day off work.  I was feeling pretty weepy, emotional and tired.  SO TIRED.  And out of breath.  A lot of times I don’t feel like my belly has “popped” yet, but I definitely feel like it’s getting harder to move around.  I’ll be doing a pregnancy update soon, so stay tuned for that if you enjoy those.

I started the day by making us crepes for breakfast and a decaf vanilla latte.  This Martha Stewart recipe is what I’ve been using to make our crepes for the past year!

Topped with nutella and banana before I folded it up.

After breakfast I went and moved my body at the gym.  I was so tired and nauseous when I walked into the gym.  I felt a million times less nauseous and tired when I left.  Success.

For lunch I made some tacos with interesting toppings…refried beans & cottage cheese.  With a peach and lemonade on the side.  I haven’t had an excellent peach yet this year.  They’ve all been meh.  Maybe next week!

In the afternoon we went and saw Despicable Me 3.  I had preordered the tickets and when we got to the theater they told us we were at the wrong theater.  They switched the tickets for us (since it was the same company) and it was all fine.  I still cried.  We don’t go see movies often (maybe twice a year) and I was really looking forward to it and I just wanted it to go smoothly.

Andrew got the snacks and I went and cried.

After the movie I was feeling less overwhelmed and less exhausted.

I came home and had a snack…

+ took a 2 hour nap with Maggie.  Our guest bedroom is getting good use with all the naps I’ve been taking.

For dinner I made us chicken topped with mozzarella + avocado + tomato + balsamic.  Served with gnocchi and broccoli.

I was nauseous for every bite.  blahhhh.  A helpful reframe for the nausea has been reminding myself that being nauseous means hormones are doing what they need to do to keep baby girl growing…that is a good thing. But it’s still hard sometimes.

Late night snack was some Ben & Jerry’s that a pregnant friend had brought over the night before :)

Anyone have any good summer beach read type of books they’d recommend? I’m in the mood to read some fiction! I’m a big fan of the Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series (not a big fan of thriller books bc I get creeped out easily when I’m up at 3 am to pee lol), so anything like that is right up my alley.

I hope my American and non-Americans friends all had a nice July 4th :)

  1. If you like that Shopaholic, I might suggest Girl Boss. I know it’s a series on Netflix right now, but I think it’s based off of a book. I haven’t read the book, but the series definitely reminded me of that Shopaholic type of book.

  2. I really hope you get to feeling better soon! I can sometimes become very hormonal and upset just with normal hormone fluctuations, so I can understand that during pregnancy, they are very strong. You look adorable! Wishing you a better day today with good energy and minimal/no nausea!

  3. Sorry if I’ve sent this before, but try a magnesium glycinate supplement for the nausea. Mag deficiency can contribute to the pregnancy nausea, and the glycinate is a form that is easier to absorb. Hang in there, I know it’s frustrating at times.

  4. I enjoy Danielle Steel books and can’t go wrong with Emily Giffin

  5. Two books I’ve read recently that I highly recommend are First Comes Love by Emily Giffin and The Violets of March by Sarah Jio!

Also I just want to say how much I appreciate your honesty in your posts. I haven’t experienced pregnancy yet, so I like to hear the “real”/unpleasant parts as well as the happy parts! And I need to make a Nutella/banana crepe soon, that looks delicious!

  6. The best authors to try in my opinion if you like the Shopaholic series are Beth Kendrick, Jenny Colgan, Kim Gruenenfelder, Whitney Gaskell, or Hester Browne. (When I read fiction, I go for light and fun–there’s too much ick to deal with in the real world imo!)

  7. “Where’d You Go Bernadette” is a great one. I love Sophie Kinsella too- her book “Remember Me?” is pretty good as well.

  8. Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld. It’s a modern re-telling of Pride and Prejudice, and I found it to be a totally fun read!

  9. If you haven’t read them already, I rate Sophie Kinsella’s one-off books as better than Shopaholic. Just finished My Not So Perfect Life today, but the others are great too.
Also, it’s not new or trendy, but Jane Austen is always good for when you want safe books. Persuasion is a good one to start with.

    • Thanks for the recs, Lolly! I’ve read a couple of Sophie Kinsella (aka Madeleine Sophie Wickham) books and have enjoyed them…never read My Not so Perfect Life though!

      • My Not So Perfect Life was cute and fun! Defintely recommend that one! And Sophie Kinsella is THE reason I got into reading in my late teen years.

Lolly has me thinking i should try to read some Jane Austen. i don’t know why that intimidates me?! Thank you for recommending a book to start with, Lolly!

And i’ll throw a series in for you. Crazy Rich Asians has been entertaining… there are three books and i am halfway through the second book at this point. so far, they’re good!

        • Jane Austen is surprisingly readable. Although I do have to caveat that I’m English – more specifically, living in Somerset :D – and so there may be some cultural language differences. And do not start with Emma. Lovely as it is, I swear entire chapters are dedicated to who wore what to the ball.
Will add Crazy Rich Asians to my (ever expanding) To Read list. I have a small baby so all about the fun reads right now.

  10. You have inspired me to try making crepes! I always thought they were much harder to make until I clicked on the link. Also good books to read this summer: The Things We Keep by Sally Hepworth… The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks…..See me by Nicholas Sparks… and anything by Jodi Picoult :) Hope this helps!

  11. Big Little Lies is great! And a non-fiction but amazing read is At Home in the World by Tsh Oxenreider. She and the book are just so wonderful. :)

  12. Anything by Liane Moriarty, especially Husband’s Secret and Big Little Lies.
Hang in there, pregnancy is tough. You’re doing great!

  13. If you haven’t read Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty, then it’s definitely an awesome fiction summer story! Not a thriller or creepy, just a good read. Really hard to put down :)

  14. Boo nausea sucks. It must be hard when you have such a lovely dinner in front you too! Although this did make me think of your post the other day about how each meal doesn’t have to be a gourmet experience. My ED thoughts would immediately make me force down food that looked that good because it was dinner when is when you are ‘allowed’ to eat rather than thinking about if my body wanted something more carby or no food at all. Whereas post ED I would just know I can eat that later and move on. Pregnancy must be challenging as it is like you have to learn intuitive eating all over again!

  15. Cottage cheese has been my jam lately; it is so versatile! I am currently reading MCAT prep books, so no light and fun recs haha. Thanks for the peek into your day!

  16. i am so sorry you are feeling so crappy. i went through it. TWICE. and it was horrible. and while i was so happy to be pregnant, i was also felt so emotional and depressed at how horrible i felt. all.the.time. for like 18 weeks. so i am sorry. and it blows. and it WILL END. hang in there, ma. x

  17. also marian keyes books! rachel’s holiday is the best, and a zillion others. i hope you love!

  18. I appreciate you being so honest about the ups and downs of pregnancy! As far as fiction books, I have been so into juvenile fiction lately… aka kids’ books. ;) I’m reading Heidi right now and it is the sweetest little story! Also just posted about my fave books and there are a few good fiction ones on there- my favorite is probably The Kitchen House.

  19. Sorry to hear about the emotional ups and downs. Glad you did little things to take care of yourself, like the movement and the movie. Your overalls are adorable! <3

  20. I had some EXCELLENT peaches from Central Market this weekend. They were in the back by the citrus (they also had some closer to the front but those were hard and sad).

Every summer I make eating great peaches my mission, and now that I am pregnant I am approaching the hunt like a full time job!

    Good luck <3

  21. Sorry you are feeling so nauseous Kylie! I’m glad to hear that you can reframe it in a positive way though :)
I like Monica McInernay or Maggie Alderson books when I am trying to find something light and fun to read.
Looking cute in those overalls too!

  22. I’m so sorry that you feel so nauseated, but I appreciate your positive reframe. Mindset is so much of the battle to find a victorious, joyful life!

  24. Have you tried a Unisom/B6 combo for nausea? It saved my butt when I was pregnant with my son. I took just the B6 during the day and took it with the Unisom at night as it made me sleepy.

  25. Love Sophie Kinsella books too and would definitely second the suggestions to read her non-Shopaholic books too. For summer, you can’t go wrong with anything by Elin Hilderbrand. Her books are almost like comfort food to me. Hope you’re feeling better!

  26. When I was pregnant and having terrible morning sickness, I bought some ginger candy that relieved nausea. They’re made for pregnant women and I think they’re in the medicine aisle. They really helped if I constantly kept one in my mouth lol. Also if you keep peanut butter crackers by your bed you can eat one or two (or however many) before you get up in the morning it really helps with sickness. It did for me at least. Good luck and I’ll be praying for happy and healthy pregnancy!

  27. any book by Elin Hildebrand is a great light girly summer read!

  28. I haven’t read the comments and am not sure if someone mentioned this, but try the saturday Eastside farmers market (Richmond at Eastside)– I’ve bought good peaches there the past two weeks. Much better than the grocery store right now!

    • I’ll have to try Urban Harvest peaches again! I tried them at the beginning of summer and they weren’t epic quite yet. Thanks, Sarah!

  29. Yes I agree with everyone else – I 100% recommend anything by Sophie Kinsella (especially “Can You Keep a Secret?” and “I’ve Got Your Number”), Liane Moriarty, Emily Giffin, and JoJo Moyes (especially “One Plus One”).

Love your blog – thank you so much for your posts!

  30. Love, love, loved reading “you are a badass”. It’s a all self-love, motivating, good vibes all jam packed into a book. (btw that cottage cheese and refried beans combo sounds very good. in a strange way!) hope your holiday was fabulous!

  31. I loved The Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante! They are about two friends growing up (all the way from kids to elderly), it’s really really good!
