Day in the Life.

My favorite thing about working for myself is the flexibility.  If I chose to work a 9-5 type of job I’m sure I’d adapt, but I work much better when I’m not being told when / what to do.  All that to say, no 2 weeks really look alike for me so I thought i’d pop in with another Day in the Life post.

7:15am: Woke-up when Andrew was leaving for work.  I slept horribly.  In the past 2 weeks I started having back pain.  It got bad enough that I saw my OB and she’s referred me to a prenatal chiropractor.  I spent most of the night tossing – turning – leaning on a heating pad – stretching my back in pigeon pose.  Walking for more than 15 minutes at one time is out of the question right now.

I was meeting a friend for breakfast soon, so I spent 30 minutes easing into my day.  Currently my morning routine involves a bible study (my bible study = listen to a sermon podcast while writing down my own notes.  I’ve never been a fan of bible studies that ask you questions and you write out your response…it always felt forced like homework.  That’s not how I learn.  So I figured out something that works for me.)  My morning routines are constantly evolving.  Sometimes I have clients early in the morning, but lately I haven’t been choosing to scheduling anyone then.

On the way to breakfast I dropped off a package at USPS.  I’m selling some of my past bridesmaid dresses on Poshmark and had to ship one to its new owner.  Have you ever sold anything with them? I found it super easy.

8:30am: Meet my friend Emily for breakfast at Morningstar.  I’m on a biscuit kick and Emily let me pick the place.  So Morningstar (again) it was!

10:15am: After breakfast I went and moved in the pool for a bit.  I feel zero back or knee pain in the pool and I love being in the water.  The pool is one of those infinity pools with a current you can turn on and swim against.  Sometimes I rotate between freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke…there is a mirror on the bottom of the pool and I love being able to watch my pregnant belly in the water :)  Sometimes I just put on a podcast and tread water (the pool is in a private area, so I can put on music or a podcast…which is great!).  Sometimes I just float.

Being in the pool really eased the back pain.  Andrew’s thought was that the swimming allowed my back to decompress.  I’m looking forward to the chiropractor appt to see her thoughts on everything.  Last night I was even able to stand to make dinner, which hasn’t happened in a couple weeks.

11am: Lunch. ICE COLD orange juice + peanut noodle filled spring rolls + soy sauce.

12:15pm: Headed to the office.  I had back to back clients that afternoon and even though I wasn’t hungry right then, I knew I wouldn’t have a relaxing break for a snack, so I stopped by Menchie’s for some froyo.

1pm-6pm: Clients! It was a rainy, overcast day and my office felt so cozy.

In other news.  I have a pimple on my left cheek that I “tried to make better.”  (lol that never works.) But now I know what it’d be like to have a mole on my face! I don’t think I would mind it. I’ve always been a person who finds freckles super attractive on people and wouldn’t mind having more!

6:20pm: HOME.  Andrew offered to cook us omelets for dinner, but I wasn’t feeling eggs.  So I just had him preheat the oven for me while I was on my drive home and I made us salads with crunchy chickpeas, a grain mix of farro + oats + barley, grapes, goat cheese, and a homemade olive oil + mustard vinaigrette.

Over the past 3 years I’ve experimented a lot with diet drinks and if I want to drink them / why I want to drink them.  In my ED I choose them out of a fear for calorie containing drinks, so I took a break from them for a bit and challenged myself with other drinks that contained calories / energy.   Now I drink bubbly diet drinks when I want them and I drink juice / lattes / regular soda when I want those things…and neither feel like a big deal.  I crave different drinks at different times and it works!

6:45pm: Eat dinner with Andrew.  Talk about our days.

7:30pm-9pm: Andrew worked on a project outside (paining the garage ceiling) while he did a workout in the garage (quite the multi-tasker hehe) and I worked some more on blog / private practice stuff.  I’ve always preferred working in the evenings rather than working in the mornings.  I like easing into my mornings and don’t like having to jump on my computer first thing.

9pm: Shower + chocolate milk snack…

9:30pm: Private practice work…billing, insurance filing, organizing, writing notes.  Typed up this blog post.

11:45pm-ish: Had another snack, then off to bed.  I haven’t been sleeping well recently in pregnancy so I haven’t been excited about / making an effort to go to bed earlier.

That was my Wednesday!

Today I’m dropping Maggie off for a temperament test at a local dog boarding / daycare facility.  She usually stays with my parents when we go out of town, but I want to make sure we have a Plan B set up for when baby girl gets here just in case.

I’ve also got a dentist appointment, a monthly call with all of these really great ladies and some afternoon / evening clients.

Happy Thursday everybody!

  1. Kylie, awesome post! I liked your reframing of the zit into the mole ;) I will use that from now on. I may even fully commit and color over it with some brown eye-liner. ;) Can I ask what sermons you listen to? I like Tim Keller, but I think I have listened to most of them already. I like to listen to sermons when I do some slow yoga or walk my dog. I normally do SheReadsTruth in the morning, which is great because you can just click on the bible references instead of looking every one up by hand. I am totally going to recreate your grain/crispy chickpea/salad dinner – thanks for the inspiration.

  2. I also think freckles are super adorable, I’ve always been so jealous of people who get all freckle-y in the sun!

  3. So sorry to hear about your back! I kept up my chiropractic adjustments all throughout my pregnancy and had no back issues whatsoever so I highly recommend it. I hope it helps for you!

  4. What a lovely day! I find people’s routines so interesting. I’m the opposite and love getting everything done in the morning because I feel like I can’t really relax if I have work later / somewhere I have to be. Would you mind sharing what sermon podcast you listen to?

  5. Hi Kylie!
I’m one of those “long-time reader, first-time commenter” types. ;)

I just wanted to say how much I truly appreciate all the work you put into your blog! You’ve been such an inspiration to me in so many ways. I related to many things you discuss as I 1) have an ED history and 2) have just become an RD & am working in ED treatment! I would love to be able to work in my own outpatient private practice some day as well!

Once again — thank you, thank you, thank you for being you :D

  6. I love this post! What an awesome day. Your café breakfast looks amazing!

  7. Hi Kylie :) I am so happy to hear the pool helped out your back pain a bit. I hope you can get some answers/relief ASAP! Though I am not pregnant, I feel you on sleep issues. I go through phases where sleep just doesn’t come as easily for me, so I don’t rush getting into bed. Have a lovely day <33

    • Thanks for commenting, Julianne :) It’s always good for me to remember that we aren’t robots and we all go through phases and there isn’t anything wrong with that.

  8. Really enjoyed reading a day in the life post from you! Thanks for sharing.

  9. I absolutely am not a morning person. I just own it now. I much prefer working later in the evening and even at night. Oh to be able to have this flexibility! Maybe one day… :)

  10. I love your “Day in the Life” posts! It really is so entertaining for me to read. I have also been struggling with sleeping lately. Do you have any pointers or remedies that have ever worked or are helping right now?

    • YAY! Glad you like this type of post, Megan! For helping me sleep right now, the only thing that’s been helpful is whatever I can do during the day to make my back hurt less by the time I go to sleep :)

    • I have insomnia and something that really helps me sleep is using a sleep mask and a white noise machine. On particularly hard nights, calming piano music is my go to, but I’ve also found it really helpful to listen to nature documentaries/podcasts recently! (Blue Planet is great, it’s on Netflix.) Hope any of these help :)

  11. Great idea to listen to a sermon and write down notes- I need to start doing that! I feel like when I just listen all the info goes in one ear and out the other. I’m sorry you haven’t been sleeping well- that’s the worst! :( I also have some old bridesmaid dresses to sell… will have to check out Poshmark! Thanks for the rec :)

    • YES! I’m trying to make room for baby stuff and I was like “these dresses got to go.” I will forever keep my prom and wedding dress…because they are my two favorite dresses ever. Hope you have a good Poshmark experience!

  12. LOVE the sermon podcast idea. Right now I am reading New Morning Mercies by Paul Tripp, a daily devotional that isn’t so “fluffy” like some other daily entry type devotionals I have read. I am definitely gonna keep this idea in mind though because I don’t like the homework feel of some devotionals and learn much better through listening/taking notes. Thanks for sharing!

  13. I love flexibility in the work day and working in the evening as well! I don’t like to be told what to do and when to do it.

  14. Hi Kylie!! Just wanted to stop by and say I’ve read your blog (and Robyn’s blog) for a long time and I truly canNOT tell you how grounding/healing the work you do is–thank you for everything!!

This veers a bit off the beaten path of what you normally write about, but I remember in a post of yours awhile ago you talked about feeling kind of alienated as an introvert in college and speaking as a fellow introvert (who is currently in college) I’d love to hear more about how you think being an introvert factors into your life and if your relationship with your introversion has changed over the years!

Hoping your back pain gets better soon :)

  15. Hi Kylie how did you start working for yourself? Did you start this blog first and then progress to private clients? Or did you have your own practise and then started blogging?
    Interestedin your wonderful journey :-)

    • Hi Lizzie! Started the blog in 2011. I blogged 3 times a week and it didn’t make money for 2 years. Then I slowly started making a baby bit of money from the blog, like $200/month. I kept the blog going all through college + grad school and started working with more brands + placing ads. After grad school I went and worked at a group practice for EDs for about 2 years + kept the blog going, but increased to posting 5 times a week. Then I left the group and opened my own practice.

      That’s what I did!

      • Thank you for sharing your journey it is very interesting. You have achieved so much and helped so many people :-)

  16. Ready for the weirdest question ever? Where are you looking at boarding your dog? We live in Houston as well and our parents always watch our puppy, but I would love to also have a plan B. It is so hard to pick one I feel comfortable with/isn’t super expensive but I like that the one you mentioned does a temperament test!

  17. I love First 5 for morning devotions! It’s an app that really helps me ease into my day.
