Spicy Grapefruit Margaritas (a mocktail!)

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of H-E-B. The opinions and text are all mine.

Someone recently asked me what my least favorite part of pregnancy is and I said, “I can’t drink margaritas!!!!!!!”

To make pregnancy beverages a wee-bit less boring, here we are with a spicy booze-less margarita! A few weeks ago I shared that frozen margarita mocktail, but this week I was feeling a spicy, on-the-rocks mocktail was in order.

Now.

I am not a spicy food person, so the first time I tried a spicy margarita I was sure I’d be like, “eww. no thank you.”  But that didn’t happen.  I loved it and spicy margaritas became my go-to drink.  Instead of the typical jalapeño margarita, this mocktail recipe is made with freshly muddled hatch chilis from H-E-B.

Hatch chilis are still a new-ish-to-me food.  Growing up my dad grew a garden filled with habanero peppers (SO SPICY!).  Since I’m not fully on team hot & spicy, I went for the mild Hatch peppers and muddled one, 1/4″ wide pepper round into the margarita.  The spiciness was present, but I didn’t feel like it singed off my tastebuds…which, you know, is nice.

If you live near an H-E-B, then you know how awesome of a grocery store it is.  They have reasonable prices, while still giving you that grocery shopping experience I want when shopping.  The stores are pretty and filled with creative food, from the bakery section to premade fish dishes like, salmon wheels stuffed with crab.

But back to current events…

Today, August 9th, H-E-B is kicking off their Hatch Chili Event, complete with in-store chili roastings and shelves stocked with numerous Hatch chili products, both sweet & savory.  See below…

…we’ve got Hatch chili filled chips, salsa, queso AND (if you’re an adventurous dessert person) even cookies.

But for now, I highly recommend you getting yourself some fresh hatch chilis and making yourself a tequila-filled or tequila-less spicy margarita.

Spicy Grapefruit Margaritas (a mocktail!)

Yield: makes 1 mocktail; easily doubled, tripled, and beyond

Ingredients:

spicy margarita mocktail
1 slice fresh H-E-B hatch chili, cut into 1/4" wide rounds
3 oz fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
3 oz store-bought limeade
3 oz bubbly club soda or seltzer water

salt rim
1 tsp salt mixed with 1 tsp chili powder

garnish
lime wedges
grapefruit wedges
fresh H-E-B hatch chilis cut into 1/4" wide rounds

Directions:

Rub the rim of a glass with a lime.  Then spread salt-chili powder mixture on a plate and dip glass rim into it.

Add your hatch chili round into your glass and muddle.  Then add in all remaining spicy margarita mocktail ingredients into your glass.  Add ice and garnishes.  ENJOY!
