Update on Jojo eating peanut foods + a baby recipe.

This post was sponsored by the National Peanut Board.

Things have still been going well feeding Jojo peanut foods! If you missed my first post that introduced the new guidelines for feeding infants peanut foods, you can check it out here. We’ve been incorporating peanut foods as often as I would like to (which, if I had to guess, I’d say is around 2 times a week) since we started introducing peanut foods around 5 1/2 months.

Jo did have some excema pop up on her chest, I think it was more due to her onesie sometimes getting wet with baby drool and rubbing her little velvet soft skin.  I put vaseline on it and it was gone in a day…so it clearly wasn’t severe excema.  As a reminder, for a child that has severe eczema or an egg allergy or both, the new guidelines recommend talking with your doctor before giving them any peanut foods. Your healthcare provider might want to do an allergy test or introduce baby-friendly peanut foods under medical supervision. Once cleared, infants in this category should start eating peanut foods around 4-6 months of age and should continue to consume them regularly.

For a child with mild to moderate eczema, the new guidelines recommend feeding them small amounts of baby-friendly peanut foods, like peanut powder mixed with a purée or thinned peanut butter, around three times a week starting when they are around 6 months old.

Fortunately, Jojo’s introduction to peanut foods has been calm and I’m sure we’ll be chowing down on peanut butter & jelly sandwiches together before I know it.  Until then, I’ll be making Jo some easier to eat peanut food options, like the below powdered peanut butter mixed with a previously tolerated purée.

I think tomorrow I may give Jo some peanut butter or powdered peanut butter mixed with mashed banana, because we haven’t done that combination yet!

And just as a reminder, parents who are anxious about introducing peanut foods early should consult their pediatrician for support and
guidance. To learn more, please be sure to check out Prevent Peanut Allergies.

Recipe idea for feeding peanut foods to a baby.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons previously tolerated purée
2 teaspoons powdered peanut butter

Directions:

Mix together until the powdered peanut butter is incorporated.  Serve to baby.

Right now Jojo is usually not interested in eating this amount all at once so we divide it throughout the day.

  1. Love this! My son has an egg allergy. He was tested for a peanut allergy, which was positive as a skin prick and negative as a blood test so he went through a peanut challenge and passed! So now he gets peanut powder 3-4x a week too!

  2. So helpful to keep in mind for the future! I love that it’s recommended to start introducing peanuts to infants younger now.
