Sweet + Savory Snack Mix

A bit ago Andrew’s mom whipped up Southern Living’s Crack Crackers. She’s a great cook so everything she makes is good, but these especially agreed with my tastebuds. After a weekend of munching on them I kinda forgot about the savory snack until just recently when eating some Cheez-Its that just weren’t as magical as the aforementioned crack crackers.

I was going to make this recipe with Cheez-Its, but when I went to the pantry to get them out I realized I’d forgotten them at the store. A new grocery store opened near us and it was all new and shiny so I was distracted and forgot stuff haha. Fortunately we had two kinds of crackers in the pantry, oyster crackers and Annie’s bunnies, so I used those instead and this recipe still came out delicious.

Since high school one of my very favorite snack combinations has been cheese + cheese crackers + milk chocolate. This snack mix elevates that combination with a savory spice blend coating the crackers. It’s a bold snack mix with it’s strong flavor and I thought it was completely fantastic paired with the cheese and chocolate. I imagine this could sound like kinda a weird combination for some of you, so what do think? Would you give it a try? Since Superbowl weekend is just around the corner I thought it’d be a good time to share it!

Sweet & Savory Trail Mix

Yield: ~5 cups

Ingredients:

crack crackers
1/3 cup olive oil
1 (1-oz.) package ranch dressing mix
1 tbsp dried dill
1 tbsp garlic powder
2 (16-oz.) packages of Cheez-Its (but could really use any cheese cracker, and/or oyster crackers like I did here)

optional mix-ins
5 string cheeses, cut into rounds
1 cup milk chocolate chips

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350F. In a bowl, combine olive oil, ranch dressing mix, dill, and garlic powder. Spread crackers over 2 rimmed baking sheets. Pour olive oil mixture over the 2 baking sheets and toss to coat. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through. Let cool and then toss with cheese and chocolate chips.

…clearly both Jojo and Maggie approved (it was a non-chocolate bite for Maggie).

  1. I LOVE cheese & chocolate together! Add to that spiced crackers, & it’s the equation to a perfect snack. ??

  2. Not feeling it! But I’m never one to crave a salty snack. Dark chocolate chips, dried cherries, teddy grahams? :)

  3. This sounds so yummy!! I’ve been making a snack mix in my crock pot that sounds pretty similar to this and it’s so nice to make a big batch and have it on hand. I’ve seen some sweet versions as well that sound so good!

  5. I just had to say, that picture of your daughter and pup!! The cutest thing ever!!

  6. Totally thought it was teddy grahams first, and that sounds much better to me. Sweet snack ftw! lol
