Weird food combos.

This week we ordered pizza.  We did a build-your-own pizza and got it topped with BBQ sauce, chicken and bacon.  I had a salad on the side that had feta and capers on it and that’s when I discovered the magic that is…

feta-chicken-bacon-BBQ sauce-caper pizza.

Today I wanna hear about the weird food combos that you love.  And if there’s an interesting story behind how you discovered the combo, I’d love to hear that too. Let me hear all your ketchup on something weird stories!

  1. I love mustard on fried egg sandwiches. It brings me back to my childhood!

  2. Okay so I love spaghetti with marmite and butter melted together over the top is this weird? I don’t know or care, it came from Nigella Lawson!
Also I once had a bad hangover, needed food pronto but didn’t have much on hand so ate a crusted seeded roll with a bit of black pudding and sausage on it topped with strawberry jam! So good! I feel like these are really British weird foods ?

    • I agree Sophie, marmite on spaghetti is the best! And I think putting jam on everything savory is a very British thing. My mothers side of the family is from England and we grew up eating eggs with jam on top which my husband thinks it is the weirdest thing ever.
Oh and cheese and celery sandwiches with a bit of Branston pickle. So hungry now.

  3. I will literally put ketchup on anything. Chicken, hamburgers (obvs), eggs, vegetables, any and every kind of potato, you name it. When I was a kid, I used to dip potato chips in ketchup. My love for it runs STRONG. Haha.

  4. I don’t know how weird this is, but I used to love grilled cheese sandwiches made with cinnamon raisin bread. I haven’t had one in ages so I’m not sure if I would still like it lol.

  5. We used to always have chopped or grated hard boiled eggs to sprinkle on our spaghetti growing up!Sooo delicious. Also, I don’t know if it’s all that unique, but corn on your pizza will give you life.

  6. Some people think this is bizarre, others have it all the time. I love carrots and Pb.

Othe weird food combos I enjoy:
Tuna + hummus (as a mayo hater, this finally got me eating tuna)
    Apples and hummus
Yogurt topped with drippy natural PB (or any nut butter really)
Kimchi mixed in with scrambled eggs

No stories behind any of them really, just my own tastebud curiosity

  7. Cottage cheese with granola. My husband thinks this is so weird! The real question is, how are you holding that pizza slice?!

  8.  I always put strawberry jam on my turkey sandwich. Oooh my Gosh, I also learned about this combo in a nutrition class that I still regularly make, a flatbread with provolone, basil, BLACKBERRIES, fresh basil with balsamic vinegar drizzled all over?? SO YUM.

  9. The other night after I had pasta for dinner and I was still hungry like a half hour later and realized I maybe needed some protein. So I had pineapple cottage cheese with tortilla chips! Weird but the sweet and salty combo was awesome haha

  10. I love cinnamon on my scrambled eggs! My brother worked with a chef who swore it was the key to the best eggs— I would agree!

  11. I love this blog post topic! Matt thinks it’s weird, but I grew up putting ketchup and sweet pickle relish on my ham hock and bean soup. I went through a phase in maybe high school where I put Heinz 57 on my potato. I accidentally let them mix and then became obsessed with it. After a while, though, I decided I no longer liked it. Haha. I love weird combos!

  12. When I was little my sister and I would make PB+J+Onion sandwiches. I don’t know how we got the idea, or who let us put onions in our PB+Js, but we loved it. I’m thinking it was Vidalia onions, so they weren’t too spicy, but my memory on the details is a little fuzzy. I just know everyone in the family thought it was hilarious that we would go make ourselves a PB+J+Onion.

  13. I make my tuna sandwiches pretty normally… mayo, mustard, bread… and then the other day i looked st the tub of hummus, shrugged and dunked my sandwich in to it. Best decision ever.

  14. I really like cottage cheese with diced avocado mixed in and eaten like a dip with pretzels!

  15. When I was younger, I used to eat plain Bugles with peanut butter. Haven’t had it in forever!

  16. I love peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. For a while I would only do dill pickle chips but now I’ll do sweet pickle chips, spicy pickle chips, spears, you name it! But it has to be crunchy PB, if it’s smooth the consistency is gloppy and blech. Oh and this is best on sourdough bread :)

  17. A little sour cream stirred into spaghetti and meat sauce. It grosses my husband out, but I like that it makes it just a little bit creamy!

  18. I love peanut butter with eggs. My husband thinks I’m crazy, but I’ve made peanut butter omelets or peanut butter toast with a salted, fried egg on top. Yum!

  19. I love putting siracha sauce on steamed broccoli. I guess I should also say that I like siracha on most things! Lol.

  20. A former boyfriend of mine used to eat peanut butter sandwiches with his chili. I thought it was so weird (and I’m team PB for life). Chili = cornbread, cheese toast, crackers, etc. right?? Well I tried it and was instantly sold. They are sooo good together!

  21. I’m all about the bagel – almond butter – avocado – kale sandwich. Sounds weird but is so good!!

  22. I feel like I should really ask Kyle before I do this because I know I have tons of them that I don’t think of as weird but he’ll see me eat and say, “WHAT ARE YOU EATING?!”

Off the top of my head though:
    Pierogies + ranch dressing
    Mac & Cheese + ketchup
Eggs + cheese + ketchup (one of the only ways I’ll eat eggs as otherwise I really don’t like them)

One of the newest ones that might not be that weird is canned mushroom soup (like a 1/4 c or so) stir-fried into ramen noodles with the seasoning packet. It sounded so disgusting to me until someone made me try it and it’s SO good!

My mom’s weirdest one is blueberry pancakes topped with mayonnaise… I can’t even get myself to try that one haha.

  23. I once made a sandwich with marshmallow creme, artificial bacon bits, and nutella. It was super good but I prolly wouldn’t want one everyday! I was visiting my grandparents as a teen and they liked to spoil me in the food department. :)

  24. I can’t think of many that I eat, but my husband has a laundry list haha.
Tortilla chips dipped in Italian dressing
    ketchup on salmon
brown gravy (the store bought kind) on pancakes
ramen noodles with a cheese single mixed in

I am sure there are more. He also douses everything in salt.

  25. OK….
I will eat peanut butter on ANYTHING….chicken, eggs, whatever!!!  And I didn’t see this one, which I came up with when I was a kid….cottage cheese mixed into chili! (Had this one 2 days ago!).  It’s more w/my Mom’s chili, because her’s is so un-spicy.  I generally don’t do it with my chili recipes, because mine are so much better lol!  But long story short, both my son and I recently had surgeries, and I made my Mom’s recipe on Sunday, prior to going in…..I think I was craving nostalgic homey-ness & comfort, so that’s what I ate when I got back home….her chili plus cottage cheese!!!  These kinds of posts are so fun :)

  26. I would have never thought this would work until I actually tried it – make a grilled cheese sandwich with Velveeta cheese and rye bread. Put blackberry jam on outside of the top piece of the grilled cheese. Soooo good.

  27. In college my husband always used to put black beans in his spaghetti + marinara…in his mind it’s just carb + tomato, and not to different than Mexican food haha! I tried it once and it wasn’t horrible..

  28. All the combos people are commenting with literally make me want to puke! I guess I like “normal” mixtures.

I suppose my weird one just since I’ve been pregnant is hot sauce on my salads.

  29. Doritos or cheetos dipped in cottage cheese! yummm

  30. Love this! my grandpa started the tradition of saltine crackers with sharp cheddar cheese and a dill pickle! so delish.

Also fried egg sandwich with swiss cheese and a little strawberry jam. I learned this from Julie at PBFingers.com back in the day!

  31. Whenever I eat boxed mac and cheese I always have to have applesauce with it! I have it on the side, and then I dip the m&c noods into the applesauce.

  32. My favorite weird combo is a good squash type soup and popcorn in it instead of crackers!!

  33. My husband eats BLTs with peanut butter. So weird. I love cheese it’s with cream cheese mmmm.

  34. My friend scrambles egg whites with peanut butter and blueberries! Never tried it but I’m intrigued. One of my other friends swears by flamin hot Cheetos dipped in cream cheese. One of the weird things my mom used to make us growing up was a hot dog split down the middle like a hot dog bun with mashed potatoes and a slice of American cheese. She baked it at 350 until the cheese browned and bubbled. So weird but I still crave it sometimes!

  35. Grilled cheese dipped in pancake syrup, or grilled cheese dipped in ranch! Sooo good

  36. My husband turned me on to tomato sandwiches with all natural peanut butter. That’s right, folks. Mayo on one slice of bread, peanut butter on the other side – tomato squished betwixt. By FAR the weirdest food combo I’ll eat. :)

  37. This really isn’t that strange—but savory style oats!! Oatmeal+avocado and sometimes a soft boiled egg.
I don’t think it’s weird, but my friends lose thier minds whenever I make it ???‍♀️

  38. My Italian grandmother used to heat up leftover spaghetti by frying it in a pan with a little butter until it got kind of crispy – and a little brown sugar to cut the acidity of the tomatoes. The brown sugar made it caramalize a bit and… wow. We called it “fried spaghetti” and now it is one of my regular meals. My husband HATES it but it reminds me of my childhood

  39. Ooh, one of my favourite sandwich fillings is chopped crystallised ginger mixed with cream cheese! My grandmother used to make it. She also introduced us to strawberries dipped in sour cream and rolled in brown sugar. I also love coleslaw with pickle juice in the dressing! Haha, this post is so much fun!

    • One of the funny things i have gotten back into eating since finally moving away from my ED has been cereal. I cut it out of my life for a decade and now I am embracing it with looooove, but so i like my sweet with salty and i discovered cinnamon life cereal mixed with goldfish crackers is amazeballs. I love it! I am now embarking on a voyage of cracker/cereal mix experiments to see what combination works best!

  40. Cinnamon on roasted chickpeas
Baby carrots wrapped in string cheese
    Oatmeal with avocado and egg

  41. Honey on an extra-cheese pizza! Sounds weird but SO good :)

  42. I’m not sure if mine are that weird. I’m really impressed with the list so far though! Like, holy cow! Anyways, mine are 1.) peanut butter toast with slices of crispy bacon on top (I like eating orange slices on the side with this too. It’s so satisfying!), 2.) my mum always served pork and beans with a big dollop of cottage cheese. I don’t know if any one else does this?

  43. I knew someone who loved a peanut butter tuna sandwich. I just can’t with this one eeeekkk

  44. I used to eat apples with baby bel cheese everyday in middle school.

At my friends birthday party I discovered pizza with nacho cheese sauce on top … double the cheese double the fun! I also used to throw m&ms on my pizza at birthday parties the sweet and salty combo of that is actually amazing!

  45. My mom would make me noodles and cottage cheese for lunch in middle school! Surprisingly good

  46. My uncles favorite sandwich growing up (and he enjoys one today) was pepperoni and grape jelly. He’ll also switch out the pepperoni for salami. My mom did two things growing up I thought was gross 1) I’d walk into the kitchen and she’d be spreading butter on graham crackers 2) she dips chips (mostly corn chips) in sour cream. As an adult, I know understand these ?

  47. When I make my own pizza, I put mozzarella cheese on top and then sautéed Brussels sprouts!

  48. Peanut butter & bacon sandwiches!

  49. avocado + jelly + cream cheese sandwich grilled! my husband thinks it’s gross!

  50. My favorite sandwich when I was a kid (and I still like today!) Is toasted bread, grape jelly and bacon. I think it was something my dad made up for us once, but it stuck and now it’s a family favorite!

  51. When I was studying abroad in London a woman at Waitrose introduced me to avocado + honey + cinnamon. Now I’m obsessed and I always eat it on top of an english muffin.

  52. My mom used to make us avocado, condensed milk, chocolate shake/mousse as a dessert. I love it! My husband thinks it’s weird!

  53. I LOVE oatmeal with all the toppings but I was usually always quite hungry about two hours later. I’ve tried to beef up the protein content (no pun intended) by adding protein powder and it tastes horrible. I wanted an alternative to overnight oats with Greek yogurt so I’ve been mixing in full fat cottage cheese and topping it with berries and nut butter. It’s so good and so filling. I got the idea from Jen at peanutbutterrunner.com

  54. So delicious is a slice of cinnamon raisin toast with almond butter, cottage cheese, and then blueberries on top of it all. Picked this up from Anne at Fannetasticfood.com Great snack or as part of a recovery meal after a work out!

  55. Pingback: quick get away. – Yeah…Immaeatthat

  56. Late to the game here, but a roasted sweet potato with sliced banana, cinnamon, peanut butter, and sea salt is legit to-die-for.

  57. When I was a kid, my Dad would always put grape jam on a slice of pizza. I finally gave it a try and it’s not half bad!

  58. Salsa in my tuna salad sandwich- you mix it in with the tuna. So good!

I also love dunking pretzels in milk. They get soft but crunchy and mmmm

  59. Kylie, I’m catching up on your posts after work left me with NO TIME! Love this! I actually like PB on toast with cracked black pepper. Another is egg salad except with soy sauce and wasabi mixed rather than mustard. =D

  60. salmon and guacamole sandwich will always be my favorite.

  61. I found this combo on a blog a few years ago and I was a tad bit skeptical at first, but I tried it anyways and it’s a major go-to for me. Sweet potato, chicken, banana, and peanut butter. Don’t knock it until you try it!

  62. Thanks for sharing these weird combinations, as it reminded me of when I visited a restaurant in Chandigarh with my friends to have lunch and tried Nutella with biryani. Trust me; it was one of the weirdest food combinations I ever tried. But here are some more weird combinations of food that you are missing out.
