Food we ate, Chapter 52.

2024 here we come! Here are some food snapshots from the last week of our year.

Let’s start with my favorite memory of last week. Me and the big girls were gonna make cookies for Santa, but then we ended up just eating the cookie dough and doing a Lite-brite together. It was awesome.

Cookie dough cheers!

Other snacky things:

I’ve been liking half a turkey sandwich.

Sugar cookies made with my favorite recipe. Anyone who tries these is always like, “holy smokes, I don’t even like sugar cookies that much, but these are amazing.” I really want to make the stacked hamburger cookies she has on her site. So cute.

Nutella toast – yum. This is on Dave’s Killer bread, which is so seedy and grainy and great.

We started Christmas festivities early because Layne and her family were heading to Italy to spend time with Marco’s family. Layne’s house Christmas-ified! So beautiful. Layne and Marco’s house is so cozy, lived in and comfortable…love being there.

After Christmas number 1, we had a few down days before the 25th…was so weird with Christmas being on a Monday. One night I made How Sweet Eats Parmesan meatballs, yum. Would make again!

In the name of budgeting (and I’ve just been enjoying them), I’ve been eating a lot of turkey sandwiches + fruit/chips/insert other side dish here. Ella picked out the below BBQ chips and they were Korean BBQ…they’re super interesting and good.

Leading up to Christmas I had Andrew take the big girls to a movie and once I got Leah down for her nap I made tortilla española with a lemon aioli while watching Selena + Chef. Loved this day. I can get annoyed about being the organizer of the kids’ schedule and wanting Andrew to take a more initiating role with that…but I think I’m coming to more of a place of acceptance and enjoying the benefits of getting to be the organizer of family life.

We had a full Christmas Eve! Brunch at Andrew’s parents followed by dinner at my parents. Andrew was feeling more and more sick, so when we got to my parents I encouraged him to go take a nap and he ended up sleeping for 3 hours.

First up, brunch!

I topped my waffle with this sour cream + brown sugar dip Pickles had out for fruit…was so good.

Appetizers!

BBQ for dinner!

Then we got home and we got the girls to sleep so we could put out the presents.

Ella.

Jojo.

Leah.

Christmas morning *I* was so excited that I woke up at 4am and decided to get up and get the food ready.

Cinnamon rolls.

And strata.

Then, I fell back asleep on the couch waiting for the house to wake up.

Since Christmas we’ve been lounging and trying to get outside as much as possible so we don’t drown in the whines of our children. My Christmas present from Andrew were pendant lights for the kitchen. He installed them a couple days ago and I LOVE THEM. I already have my next project for him, which is making me a dedicated baking area with floating shelves. I had to get buy in from him, which I successfully got with multiple iterations of the design lol and now he’s on board. I do love how capable with home improvement jobs he is. I want him to teach the girls how to sheetrock, tile, etc. Good life skills to have.

They look so good!!!!!!!!!

What a pretty picture (was taking a break from the children).

Hope you had a good holiday! Happy New Year!

  1. Everything looks lovely! What a fun array of different food this week. Could you share the tortilla Espanola recipe? I’m super curious! Looked great! Wishing you and your family a happy new year!

  2. Currently watching Selena + Chef!!

  3. My 4 year-old (and only) daughter doesn’t quite grasp the Santa concept — on Christmas Eve I asked if she wanted to leave out a plate of cookies…she said yes but then afterwards snatched them up for herself and ate them in her bedroom. My favorite memory of this year’s holiday! :)
