Food we ate, Chapter 4.

Hello, fellow enjoyers of food. Here’s a glimpse at some of the meals and snacks I enjoyed this week.

I am having a moment with tart dried cherries. Pairing them with walnuts for a snack.

Another snack, we’ve been freezing batches of cookie dough (we press them thin so it’s easy to break some off) to make mug cookies. Paired with an afternoon iced latte here.

I also had a very specific and random craving for black bean brownies, so I made them…and they’re so great. Fudgy to the max. Not gonna link to the recipe since this may not be a helpful mention for some.

For dinners we did a lot of repeats of what we’ve been having lately: spaghetti, nachos, a chicken dish Andrew made where one of the the sides was simply homemade croutons – I married a genius!!, enchiladas, and chicken n’ dumplings + sourdough, a big spread we munched on while watching football.

I opened this Crema wine with the chicken + crouton dish and really liked it. Would buy again!

Lunches: a lot of turkey sandwiches, a lunch date with a friend at Flowerchild, leftover enchiladas.

Breakfasts: I made a big batch of overnight oats – banana walnut. The bananas browned by the end of the week and that was a bit off-putting.

Those were the greatest hits from the week! And with that I’m going to go change the baby’s diaper, jump in the car and head to the lake for a couple days. Hope you have a good one!

  1. Hey Kylie! Longtime reader and I love your blog, so happy you’re back. Question about kids + eating + tv. Also totally understand this is different for a sporting event where part of the fun is the snacks. Do you have thoughts/advice on letting kids watch tv while they eat a meal? I’m not against tv in general but do kind of worry about putting it on while they eat because I don’t want them to learn to be distracted while they eat… does that make sense?! Curious to hear your opinion if you’re open to sharing. Thanks! :)

    • Hi Melissa! Thanks for commenting :)

My answer is…it happens. The kids watch TV while they eat sometimes, we don’t try to make a habit of it, but…it happens. I do mention to them that it’s best to do one thing at a time (i.e. not watch TV and eat at the same time) because of the reason you mentioned, and will ask them to come to the table sometimes. But sometimes I’m unable to handle the pushback they’ll give me, so I just enjoy a calmer moment to myself and let them eat there. However, I don’t see them ending up mindlessly eating in front of the TV so I’m (for better or for worse) not concerned about it very much. I wish all of our meals were eaten at the table together and the kids were well behaved and readily accepted what I cooked, but since they are kids, lately I’ve been prioritizing having dinner on the table for Andrew and I so he and I can eat together and be together. I feel like we’re mostly in a stage where Andrew and I are trying to maintain our sanity and connection in marriage, so since that would have to suffer and we’d all be miserable if we had to eat at the table every time…TV happens. I am pretty against having to eat all meals at the table tho as a principle…that seems too rigid for me and just isn’t my personality at all so wouldn’t work for our fam.

  2. I love your blog and have been following for a while! While my husband and I don’t have any kids (and we will not–we’re old–like 45!) we recently got 2 cats and we are trying to get our current home ready to sell (and I recently moved here–long story but a good one, but I’ll spare the details!); thus, life is chaos and I haven’t been able to work out the way I normally would. I have a (terrible) history of disordered eating patterns (anorexia) and reading your blog helps immensely in realizing that we are not perfect and that things ebb and flow in life. Thanks so much for your inspiration:)

  3. Hi, Kylie! I’ve been meaning to ask ever since one of your girls mentioned “crouton salad,” have y’all had or made panzanella? We make it with roasted baguette chunks, garlic, mayo, grated parm, red wine vinegar, cucumber and grape tomatoes. Always so tasty & it’s definitely a crouton salad 😋
